Life
He was born in Delhi in 1982, the son of the qawwal Ustad Hamid Hussain, and trained under Ghulam Ali among others; he came to Mumbai around 2000 and sang his first film song in Kaante. Kajra Re (2005) was the first big hit; Rahman's Naqaab, Jodhaa Akbar, Delhi-6, Rockstar and Jab Tak Hai Jaan, Pritam's Jab We Met and Habib Faisal's Ishaqzaade followed, and the Hindi Srivalli (Pushpa, 2021). He sings in several languages and performs classical and Sufi concerts.
The voice
Javed Ali's voice is sweet, flexible and classically grounded, with a qawwal's ease in ornament and a tenderness in the quiet song — Kun Faya Kun is the clearest example of both at once.
