Kailash Kher
Kailash Kher came to Mumbai after a failed export business and a jingle or two, and Allah Ke Bande in Waisa Bhi Hota Hai Part II (2003) made his rough, soaring voice famous overnight. His band Kailasa — Teri Deewani, Saiyyan, Tauba Tauba — and film songs for Rahman, Pritam and Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy (Ya Rabba, Chand Sifarish, Arziyan, Rang Deeni) made him the Sufi voice of the 2000s.

Life
He was born in Meerut in 1973 to a Kashmiri Pandit family; his father sang folk and devotional music. He left home young, studied in Delhi, tried business in Rishikesh and came to Mumbai in 2001; Ram Sampath's jingles led to Vishal-Shekhar's Allah Ke Bande. Kailasa (2006), with Paresh and Naresh Kamath, produced Teri Deewani and Saiyyan; film work included Mangal Pandey (Rang Deeni), Fanaa (Chand Sifarish, Filmfare Award with Shaan), Salaam-e-Ishq (Ya Rabba) and Delhi-6 (Arziyan). He received the Padma Shri in 2017 and tours constantly.
The voice
Kailash Kher's voice is high, rough and penetrating, with a folk singer's open throat and a Sufi singer's sense of flight; it is at its best in the long devotional cry.
