Sukhwinder Singh
Sukhwinder Singh sang Chaiyya Chaiyya on the roof of a moving train in Dil Se (1998) and Jai Ho in Slumdog Millionaire (2008), which won the Academy Award for A.R. Rahman and Gulzar and a National Award for him. Between and after came Ramta Jogi, Haule Haule, Marjaani, Bismil and Nachde Ne Saare — the voice for the song that has to lift the whole film.

Life
He was born in Amritsar in 1971, sang as a child in Punjab, and came to Bombay as a composer and singer; Karma (1986) gave him an early chorus, and Aaja Sanam in Khilaaf (1991) a first solo. Rahman's Dil Se changed everything, and he has been Rahman's voice of choice for the big, open-throated song ever since; he also won the National Award for Haider's Bismil (2014) and sang the title songs of Sultan and Dangal.
He has composed for a few films, performed worldwide and judged television; his two National Awards are for Slumdog Millionaire (Jai Ho) and Haider.
The voice
A raw, powerful, slightly hoarse tenor with a Punjabi folk singer's throw and a dancer's rhythm — a voice that sounds as if it is standing on something high.
