Alisha Chinai
Alisha Chinai's Made in India (1995), produced by Biddu, was the album that made Indian pop a national industry — the video played on every channel for a year — and ten years later her Kajra Re (Bunty Aur Babli, 2005) won her a Filmfare Award. Between them came Baby Doll (1988), Jadoo, the Bombay Girl single and film songs for Anu Malik and Jatin-Lalit.

Life
She was born in Ahmedabad in 1965 to a Gujarati-Parsi family, grew up in Bombay, and made her first album Jadoo (1985) with Biddu; Baby Doll (1988) introduced her to film producers, and Anu Malik used her through the early 1990s (Sexy Sexy, Khuddar). Made in India sold several million cassettes; she has since sung for Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, Pritam and Vishal-Shekhar and judged television.
The voice
A smoky, low, Western pop alto with attitude — the first Indian female voice that sounded like a pop star rather than a playback singer.
