Lucky Ali
Lucky Ali, Mehmood's son, released Sunoh in 1996 and its O Sanam video, shot in Egypt, made a different kind of Indian pop star — husky, unhurried, unglamorous. Sifar, Aks and Kabhi Aisa Lagta Hai followed; in film he sang Na Tum Jaano Na Hum and Ek Pal Ka Jeena (Kaho Naa… Pyaar Hai, 2000), Aa Bhi Ja (Sur) and Hairat (Anjaana Anjaani).

Life
Maqsood Mehmood Ali was born in Bombay in 1958, farmed, worked on oil rigs and acted (Sur, Kaante) before Sunoh; his albums for Sony and the Rajesh Roshan songs in Kaho Naa… Pyaar Hai made him a star in his forties, and he has composed, acted and farmed in Bengaluru since, returning to perform periodically.
The voice
A low, hoarse, intimate baritone that barely rises above conversation, with a folk-singer's roughness — a deliberate rejection of the playback polish.
