Colonial Cousins (Hariharan and Leslee Lewis)
Colonial Cousins — the ghazal and film singer Hariharan and the guitarist-producer Leslee Lewis — released their first album in 1996 and put a Carnatic kriti over an acoustic groove: Krishna Nee Begane Baro became one of the best-loved Indipop videos, and Sa Ni Dha Pa and The Way We Do It followed. Landmark songs
Life
Leslee Lewis, a Bombay advertising composer and guitarist, and Hariharan formed the duo in 1996; the debut album won MTV Asia awards and sold through the late 1990s, and they have returned for albums in 1998, 2001 and 2012 and a Coke Studio appearance.
The voice
Hariharan's ornamented classical tenor against Lewis's plain English pop vocal — the contrast was the concept.
