Ila Arun
Ila Arun brought the raw Rajasthani folk voice into the Hindi film song: Choli Ke Peeche Kya Hai (with Alka Yagnik, Khal Nayak, 1993), Morni Baaga Ma Bole (Lamhe), Ringa Ringa (Slumdog Millionaire). She is also an actress and a theatre person, and her folk-pop albums — Vote For Ghagra, Banjaran — were part of the Indipop wave.

Life
She was born in Jaipur in 1954, studied at the National School of Drama and worked in theatre and television through the 1970s and 1980s, acting in Shyam Benegal's films and others. Shiv-Hari's Lamhe (1991) and Laxmikant-Pyarelal's Khal Nayak made her voice a fixture of the 1990s; she sang for A.R. Rahman (Ringa Ringa, 2008), composed and sang folk-pop albums for Magnasound, and has continued acting — Jodhaa Akbar, Begum Jaan, Ghoomketu — and running a theatre company with her husband Arun Bajpai.
The voice
Ila Arun's voice is deep, rough and earthy, sung from the chest in the Rajasthani manner — the opposite of the film heroine's sweetness, which is exactly why composers paired it with Alka Yagnik's for contrast.
