Amit Kumar
Amit Kumar grew up as Kishore Kumar's son and sounded enough like him to inherit part of his work when the older voice tired. Bade Achhe Lagte Hain in Balika Badhu (1976), for R.D. Burman, made his name; Love Story (1981) won him a Filmfare Award; and through the 1980s he sang for Sanjay Dutt, Kumar Gaurav, Anil Kapoor and the younger heroes before stepping back in the mid-1990s to concerts and his own compositions.

Life
He was born in Calcutta in 1952 to Kishore Kumar and Ruma Guha Thakurta, and grew up with his mother in Calcutta before moving to Bombay in his teens. His father put him in Door Ka Raahi (1971) as an actor and singer; R.D. Burman, his father's closest collaborator, gave him Bade Achhe Lagte Hain and then much of his 1980s work: Love Story, Teri Kasam, Jawaani, Saagar, Ijaazat.
He also sang for Laxmikant-Pyarelal (Tezaab), Rajesh Roshan, Bappi Lahiri and Anu Malik, and in Bengali films. After his father's death in 1987 he carried on for a few years and then chose to sing less, concentrating on stage tribute shows and recordings of his own; he has recorded and performed with his daughter Muktika. He lives in Mumbai and Khandwa.
The voice
Amit Kumar's voice is lighter and higher than his father's, with the same relaxed phrasing and an instinct for the pop-flavoured melody of the early 1980s. In the R.D. Burman songs he sounds exactly like what he was: a modern young man singing with the ease of a house in which music was a family language.
