Life

She came from Calcutta and trained in classical music, and was introduced to Hindi film by Hemant Kumar in the mid-1970s. Bappi Lahiri's Chalte Chalte gave her her one widely remembered song; she sang in Shalimar, Dooriyan, Gaman (Aapki Yaad Aati Rahi, for Jaidev, which was praised) and several films into the 1980s before concentrating on Bengali recording and teaching.

The voice

A low, soft, slightly smoky voice with a Bengali adhunik colouring, suited to the quiet, reflective song.
