Hemlata
Hemlata was the female voice of Ravindra Jain's gentle, melodic scores for Rajshri Productions in the second half of the 1970s: Chitchor (with Yesudas), Ankhiyon Ke Jharokhon Se (1978), whose title song won her the Filmfare Award, Nadiya Ke Paar, Abodh. She sang for other composers too, and in Bengali and other languages, but it is the Rajshri songs that remain in circulation.

Life
Lata Bhatt was born in Hyderabad in 1954 to a Rajasthani family and grew up in Calcutta, where she sang on stage as a child; she was renamed Hemlata to avoid confusion with Lata Mangeshkar. Her first film songs came in the late 1960s for Kalyanji-Anandji and others, and the association with Ravindra Jain from the mid-1970s produced the hits: Tu Jo Mere Sur Mein (Chitchor, 1976), Ankhiyon Ke Jharokhon Se, Kaun Disa Mein (Nadiya Ke Paar, 1982), the Abodh songs for Madhuri Dixit's debut (1984).
She also sang for Laxmikant-Pyarelal, Usha Khanna and Khayyam, and devotional and Rajasthani music; she married the actor Yogesh Bali. Her film work thinned in the late 1980s and she has since performed on stage and recorded independently.
The voice
Hemlata's voice is thin, high and sweet with a slight nasal brightness, and a folk-like innocence that Ravindra Jain used for the village girl and the schoolgirl bride. It is a voice of the small film and the small town, and in Ankhiyon Ke Jharokhon Se it is exactly right.
