Life
He was born in 1943 in Charkhadi, Gujarat, and came to Bombay as a mechanical engineer; a chance recording for Kalyanji-Anandji in Vishwas (1969), in place of Mukesh, began a parallel singing career. He sang for Kalyanji-Anandji, S.D. Burman (Loote Koi Man Ka Nagar in Abhimaan, with Lata), Laxmikant-Pyarelal, Bappi Lahiri and Rajesh Roshan through the 1970s and 1980s, and for Saudagar (1991). His Gujarati ghazal albums from the 1970s onwards made him a major figure in that language, and he performs widely.
The voice
Manhar Udhas's voice is a light, clear, slightly nasal tenor with a Mukesh-like plainness, well suited to the slow film song and the ghazal.
