Life
He was born in Bombay in 1961 into a Rajasthani musical family — his brothers Shravan (of Nadeem-Shravan) and Vinod are musicians — played tabla for Lata, Asha and Jagjit Singh, and turned to singing in the late 1980s; Sonali, a singer in her own right, married him in 1988 and the pair's ghazal albums (Ishq, Baarish, Sheeshe Ke Ghar) run alongside his film work for Anu Malik, Madan Mohan-Sanjeev Kohli, Mithoon and A.R. Rahman.
The voice
A full, classically rounded baritone with a sob in the upper register — Sandese Aate Hain and Tere Liye use both ends; Sonali's is a sweet, steady alto.
