Life

She was born in Larkana in 1954, trained by her father Ghulam Haider and then Salamat Ali Khan, began on Radio Pakistan in 1973, and has recorded kafi, ghazal and qawwali for fifty years; Coke Studio Pakistan brought her to a new generation. She received the Pride of Performance, Sitara-e-Imtiaz, Hilal-e-Imtiaz and Nishan-e-Imtiaz.

The voice

A huge, dark, almost genderless voice that moves from a whisper to a roar within a line, with the improvising freedom of the Sufi singer rather than the ghazal artist's polish.
