Rajendra and Nina Mehta
Rajendra and Nina Mehta were the first married couple to sing ghazals as a duo, from the late 1960s, and their records of Dilli, Lucknow and Hyderabad poets set the pattern that Jagjit-Chitra and Bhupinder-Mitali followed. Kabhi Baat Hoti Nahi, Aaj Ki Raat and their Nida Fazli settings were cassette favourites.

Life
Rajendra Mehta, from a Punjabi family in Lahore, settled in Bombay after Partition and sang Hindi film songs in small numbers before taking up the ghazal; he married Nina, a Gujarati singer, in 1967, and they performed together for nearly fifty years. Rajendra died in 2016, Nina the following year.
The voice
Rajendra's was a rich, slightly theatrical baritone; Nina's a sweet, firm soprano — their harmonised refrains were the duo's trademark.
