Life
He was born in London in 1971 to a Pakistani diplomat father and a Jammu-born mother, learned piano as a child, and recorded in Pakistan in the late 1980s (Raag Time, with Asha Bhosle); he moved to Mumbai in 2000, where Kabhi To Nazar Milao and Tera Chehra (2002) sold in the millions, lost a famous amount of weight in 2007, and became an Indian citizen in 2016; he received the Padma Shri in 2020.
The voice
A warm, agile, slightly nasal tenor with a classical player's intonation and an easy comedy — Lift Karaa De's grin and Noor-e-Khuda's gravity from the same throat.
