Life
Born in the 1930s into a Marathi-speaking family in Hyderabad, they trained in Hindustani music and sang qawwali from the 1950s in a trained, taan-filled style; HMV recorded them widely, they toured the Gulf and Africa, and their rivalry with Jani Babu Qawwal filled Bombay grounds through the 1970s. Shankar died in 1984.
The voice
Two classically trained tenors with sargam and taan work beyond most qawwals; theirs was the 'classical' qawwali of the muqabla stage.
