Life

He was born in Lahore in 1932, settled in Delhi after Partition, worked for the National Book Trust, and began recording bhajans for HMV in the 1960s with his wife Nandini Sharan; he sang only devotional music, performed across India, the West Indies and Fiji, and died in Delhi in 2007.

The voice

A deep, slow, meditative baritone with no display at all — the bhajan sung as prayer rather than performance.
