Chadhta Sooraj Dheere Dheere — the qawwali every Indian knows.

Aziz Nazan's Chadhta Sooraj Dheere Dheere Dhalta Hai Dhal Jayega — on mortality, the pride of kings, the dust — is probably the most heard qawwali in India, played at every urs and in every cassette shop; Jhoom Barabar Jhoom Sharabi (Five Rifles, 1974) is the other, borrowed again by Shaad Ali's film thirty years later.

Life

He was born in Bombay in 1938, learned from Ustad Khan Sahib and sang in the qawwali muqablas of the city in the 1960s; HMV recorded him from the early 1970s, and Chadhta Sooraj (Ismail Azad's words; Aziz Nazan's setting) made him famous across the subcontinent. He sang in a few films and died in Bombay in 1992.

The voice

A strong, open, street-trained tenor with the qawwal's hammering rhythm and a plain, carrying diction.
