Meena Kapoor sang for Anil Biswas, Sachin Dev Burman and a few others in the late 1940s and 1950s, in a quiet, cultivated style that never sought the crowd. Her songs for Biswas in Pardesi (1957) and Char Dil Char Rahen are the ones most often recalled; she married him in 1959 and sang little afterwards.

Life

She was born in Calcutta in 1930, the daughter of the actor Bikram Kapoor, and came to Bombay as a child. She sang her first film songs in the mid-1940s; Anil Biswas used her in Aath Din, Gharonda, Pardesi and Char Dil Char Rahen, and S.D. Burman in Afsar and Bahar. She married Anil Biswas in 1959, moved with him to Delhi in 1963 when he joined All India Radio, and sang rarely after that. She died in Mumbai in November 2017.

The voice

Meena Kapoor's voice was low, soft and refined, closer to the Bengali adhunik style than to the Bombay playback norm, and best heard in the slow, reflective song.
