Khayyam's wife and the voice of his wedding songs — Tum Apna Ranj-o-Gham and Kaahe Ko Byaahi Bides.

Jagjit Kaur sang a small number of songs, almost all for her husband Khayyam, and a few of them are among the most affecting in Hindi film: Tum Apna Ranj-o-Gham in Shagoon (1964), Kaahe Ko Byaahi Bides in Umrao Jaan (1981), Dekh Lo Aaj Humko Jee Bhar Ke in Bazaar (1982). She never sought a career and never needed one.

Life

She was born into a Punjabi landowning family and trained in music before marrying Khayyam in the mid-1950s, a marriage opposed by her family. She sang for him in Shagoon, Shola Aur Shabnam, Umrao Jaan and Bazaar, and in a few other films, and otherwise stayed out of the industry; she and Khayyam set up a trust for musicians in their son's memory. She died in Mumbai on 15 August 2021, two years after her husband.

The voice

Jagjit Kaur's voice was plain, warm and entirely without artifice, with a Punjabi folk directness that Khayyam used for the wedding song and the lament.
