Surendra
Surendranath, billed simply as Surendra, was a lawyer who became Mehboob Khan's answer to K.L. Saigal: a singing hero for the Sagar Movietone and Mehboob films of the late 1930s and 1940s. Anmol Ghadi (1946), opposite Noor Jehan and Suraiya, is the film by which he is remembered. When playback took over he turned to character roles and acted for another forty years.

Life
He was born in Batala in 1910, took a law degree in Lahore, and was brought to Bombay in 1936 by Mehboob Khan for Deccan Queen; the song Birha Ki Aag Lagi More Man Mein made him known. Through the late 1930s and 1940s he was Mehboob's leading man — Jagirdar, Gramophone Singer, Alibaba, Anmol Ghadi, Elaan, Anokhi Ada — and composers Anil Biswas and Naushad wrote his songs.
After 1950 he sang less and acted more, playing fathers, judges and kings in films from Mughal-e-Azam to Waqt and on into the 1980s. He received a Filmfare special award late in life and died in Bombay in 1987.
The voice
Surendra sang in the Saigal manner of the day — a full, straightforward baritone with careful diction and a slight formality — and the Anmol Ghadi duets with Noor Jehan show it at its most appealing.
