Khursheed Bano
Khursheed was one of the most popular singing actresses of the years around 1940, and her pairing with K.L. Saigal in Bhakta Surdas (1942) and Tansen (1943) produced some of the best-selling records of the period. She moved to Pakistan after Partition, made two films there, and retired.

Life
Irshad Begum was born in 1914 in Chuniyan, near Lahore, and entered films in Lahore and Calcutta in the early 1930s. By the late 1930s she was in Bombay at Ranjit Movietone, where Sardar Chandulal Shah's studio built films around her singing: Shadi, Musafir, Pardesi and then Bhakta Surdas and Tansen with Saigal, with scores by Gyan Dutt and Khemchand Prakash. Ghata Ghanghor Ghor and More Balapan Ke Saathi from Tansen were sung everywhere.
She married and moved to Karachi in 1948, made Mandi (1956) and Fankar (1956) there, and then left the profession for good, living privately for half a century. She died in Karachi in April 2001.
The voice
Khursheed's voice was clear, sweet and unforced, higher and lighter than most of her contemporaries, with a natural lilt that suited the romantic duet. In the Tansen songs she matches Saigal's unhurried phrasing line for line.
