Shyamal Mitra was one of the defining Bengali male voices of the 1950s–70s, equally at home in film songs and the modern 'adhunik' record, and a composer and film producer in his own right.

Landmark songs
Life
Born in Naihati, he came to Calcutta to learn music and worked with composers such as Salil Chowdhury and Sudhin Dasgupta, recording a long run of modern songs that are still sung at every Bengali gathering.
He composed and sang for films, produced several of them, and sang a handful of Hindi songs as well. His Puja releases were eagerly awaited each autumn.
