Suchitra Mitra was one of the great exponents of Rabindra Sangeet, a teacher and head of the Rabindra Sangeet department at Rabindra Bharati University, and the first woman Sheriff of Kolkata.

She trained at Santiniketan, founded the Kolkata music school Rabitirtha, and was long associated with the Indian People's Theatre Association; her performances brought out the strength and conviction in Tagore's songs.
